You’re in good hands at McLaren-Bay Region’s Cardiac Rehab Program

Cardiac Rehabilitation at McLaren-Bay Region is a medically-supervised program for individuals with cardiovascular disease, whether congenital or acquired. The primary goal of Cardiac Rehabilitation is to enable the individual to achieve their optimal level of physical, psychological, and social well-being.

Our Cardiac Rehabilitation program is nationally certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Individuals who participate in the program work with a staff of nurses and exercise physiologists, all Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified, and many certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as exercise specialists.

Cardiac Rehabilitation can benefit those individuals with conditions or procedures such as:

  • angina pectoris
  • myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • valve repair or replacement
  • interventional procedures such as angioplasty and coronary stenting
  • post heart transplant patients
  • heart failure
  • arrhythmia
  • device implants, such as pacemakers or internal defibrillators
  • multiple cardiac risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and smoking)

Cardiac Rehabilitation is by physician referral, and provides supervised exercise and education for individuals with cardiovascular disease, or for those recovering from a cardiovascular procedure in three phases:

Phase I Cardiac Rehabilitation begins while the individual is hospitalized. Patients receive information on their individual heart-related illness, recovery, exercise, risk factor modification, and nutrition.

Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation is on an outpatient basis ay Bay’s West campus This phase consists of medically-supervised exercise sessions, including continuous ECG (electrocardiographic) monitoring and cardiac education classes. Participants typically attend three sessions per week. Phase II is typically covered by most insurances.

Education topics include:

      • Benefits of Exercise
      • Cardiac Medications
      • Cardiac Risk Factors
      • Cholesterol
      • Cooking Demonstration
      • Coping With Heart Disease
      • Diabetes Education
      • Food Label Reading

Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation is a voluntary maintenance exercise and education program for those completing Phase I and II, and desiring a convenient location with equipment suited to aerobic activity. This phase is generally not covered by insurance.
